Minutes of January 11 TWHBEA
Versatility/Rules Committee Meeting
The Versatility/Rules committee met on January 11, 2008 at the TWHBEA Office Lewisburg, TN. Committee Members present: Dan Starnes, Chairperson, Debbie Birk by phone & in person: Sandy Harris, Diane McMurtrey, Mary Beth Pruett & Linda Starnes. Absent Committee Members: Marietta Gambrell, Joyce Moyer, Carol Smithson, Cathy Stoops & Kathy Zeis. Also present at the meeting were Dee Dee Sale, David Pruett, and Lori Puckett.
Pleasure Horse Committee Selection
The first item discussed was the selection of Pleasure Horse Committee Members & the Regulations to serve on this committee. There are no accurate records of how members were to be chosen and no real requirements for the committee. Diane basically just wanted to start from scratch in view of all the changes going on for 2008. Therefore, the following decisions were made for the Pleasure Horse Committee Members:
21 committee members are to be picked by Pleasure Horse VP
The members must have served 1 year on a Pleasure Horse Sub. Committee
Eventually, members will serve for 2 years & have the opportunity to serve 2 consecutive terms before having to sit off a year.
For 2008 & 2009:
10 people will serve a one year term for 2008
11 people will serve a two year term for 2008 & 2009
It will be a random draw in the 21 members as to whether the people picked for the Pleasure Horse Committee will serve a one year or a two year term.
Versatility Program
Program Today – We need to make sure that all requests for being entered in the Versatility Program are fulfilled. We need to promote the program & look at a plan in the future. The rules that are in the 2006 revision of the Versatility Rule Book are what the program will go by for 2008. There are a few minor typographical errors in the book, but the main program will run as listed with the requirement and rules in that book.
Issues Facing the Program

What to do Next & Written Rules – Versatility Book
Another Rule Book printing is not an option at this time. We must find the alternatives in PDF form, or other forms that can be downloaded or put on a CD, as well as on the Website.
We may not be able to write Supreme or Superior Champion Articles in the VOICE, but it is probable that we could write the article and put it on the Website.
Also on the website, not all Adult Supreme or Youth Superior Horses are listed, so we need to make a call through the VOICE & through the website to contact TWHBEA with that information.
Suggestion also to have in the website & VOICE: Each person that turns in a point book must submit a show bill for each horse – it will be easier for staff to record points. Also needed: rules for the program (especially the 9 events needed for youth superior)
Mary Beth Pruett is in the process of writing an article that will clearly spell out qualifications for the program, as well as the FUN of being involved.
Other items brought up:
Novice classes help encourage new horse & rider teams
Have Versatility Classes in regular shows with a jackpot
Versatility Clinics – not with paid people – regular participants come & help – bring obstacles and help people from the ground.
Other ideas in the future:
Possibly getting the World Versatility Champion status put on the papers – WVC
Beyond Supreme or Superior – Ultimate – Super Horse
Ultimate Prizes
Increase Awards & the way people can receive the awards
Restructuring the program with a major overhaul
Possibilities of charging to be in the program – have ownership into the program and increase the awards.
Proposed Rule Changes
No need to comment or add the rule for bell boots, etc. to obstacle driving and other classes since it is already in the Versatility Rule Book. When the typos are fixed, so will that confusion.
Out for Comment Period: Comments are needed for the additions and changes to the TWH over Fences to become Hunter Hack, Working Hunter, Green Working Hunter, Working Hunter and Jumping as outlined in the presentation at the 2007 December Pleasure Horse meeting.
Out for Comment Period: Jenny Jackson will be asked to supply dressage patterns that can be given at the requests by riders and show management.
Western Riding motion should be able to be commented on two different issues:
#1. Add a Pattern 2
#2. Add the rule “upon a horse’s 4th simple lead change and/or failure to change leads in a western riding pattern when called for that horse is disqualified”
World Versatility Show
These decisions are still subject to change.

Dan made the suggestion on the possibilities for a raffle to raise money. (His 4-H Camp committee raised $5,000 with a shot gun raffle & banquet).
Diane is looking into other possibilities for goody bags & would like for everyone else to think of other places to collect items or other sources of funding.
We need for anyone that comes up with ideas for funding to get in touch with Diane.
