The Tennessee Walking Horse Museum

Of particular interest to any Tennessee Walking Horse enthusiast visiting middle Tennessee is the Tennessee Walking Horse Museum, the only institution solely devoted to preserving the history of the Walking Horse. Located on the square in Lynchburg, Tennessee, the museum features exhibits on nearly every aspect of the Tennessee Walking Horse. There are exhibits on the formation of the breed registry, foundation bloodlines, World Grand Champions, Celebration history, Versatility, and care and training. There are also special rotating exhibits focusing on the current World Grand Champion, a featured breeder, and a featured trainer. Artifacts of interest on display in the museum include the saddle used by Floyd Carothers on Strolling Jim when he won the very first World Grand Championship in 1939, the bridle with the rope mouthpiece used on Ebony’s Mountain Man when he won the World Grand Championship, and the first patent leather saddle ever used in competition at the Celebration. In addition, the museum has a “hands on” area where visitors can browse through old copies of the Blue Ribbon, old sale programs, registry books, and other literature relating to the breed. Finally, the museum offers a number of informative videos that visitors can watch at their leisure. Admittance to the Tennessee Walking Horse Museum is free and its hours of operation are from 9am to 5pm Tuesday through Saturday.

The Tennessee Walking Horse Museum is made possible by the cooperative effort of Moore County, Tennessee, Jack Daniels Distillery, the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, and the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ AssociationSM.
