TWHBEA Requires All Foals To Be DNA Parentage Verified

©Voice, April 2007

• In order for parentage verification for a newly registered foal to be accomplished through DNA, it is necessary that the sire and dam both be DNA’d.

• TWHBEASM must have a request for the conversion of the stored blood samples of these sires and dams and there is a one-time fee of $25.00 each. To download the DNA Conversion Request form click here.

• The TWHBEASM encourages everyone to go ahead and request the conversion of their breeding stock before the applications for foals are submitted; however, do not let the fact that they have not been converted cause you to miss an important fee deadline. You may request conversion at the time of foal registration.

• If the stored blood sample on file is determined to not be viable or if there is no stored sample, the TWHBEASM will issue at no charge a red top tube and blood you will be required to pull blood for 2 reasons:
1) to verify that the sample is from the same horse as originally tested, and 2) to extract the DNA.

• Upon receipt of an application for registration of a foal, TWHBEASM will issue a DNA Hair Kit that will contain a sheet of paper with instructions for the collection of the sample and a self-addressed envelope to the University of Kentucky laboratory. If the sire and dam samples have not been converted, you will experience a delay in receiving your completed certificate of registration for the foal until both parents have been completed.

• Once influx of initial orders are completed, normal processing of the DNA on a new foal should take approximately 10 days.

• Please note that the DNA Hair Kit is designed for the horse whose name and number is listed on the collection sheet, and only one sample should be mailed in the accompanying envelope. DO NOT USE KIT FOR ANY ANIMAL OTHER THAN THE ONE SPECIFIED. Please follow the instructions on the back of the collection sheet.

• The TWHBEASM understands that this process is new to most everyone, and there are many situations that can arise. However, we welcome any and all questions you may have regarding DNA and parentage verification. We value your suggestions and thoughts regarding this very important program which is being used to help maintain the integrity of our great breed. As always, please free to call 931-359-1574.
